In Brazil, white rice is the most consumed type, followed by parboiled and brown rice1. However, studies indicate that pigmented cultivars, such as black rice, represent a more nutritionally beneficial alternative for consumption1.
Black rice has been cultivated in China for over 4,000 years and was once reserved for consumption solely by the emperor1. The first seeds arrived in Brazil only in 19921, though today it is easily found on supermarket shelves.
The Opuntia ficus-indica cactus is native to Latin America—ranging from Mexico to Colombia—and was later introduced to the Mediterranean basin2. It is known by various names depending on the region, such as Prickly pear, devil's fig, Barbary fig, forage cactus, or sabra2.
Its flowers are hermaphroditic, featuring showy, bright yellow or yellow-orange petals2. Flowering typically occurs twice a year, depending on daytime temperatures exceeding 20ºC2.
