Turnera diffusa is a shrub belonging to the Turneraceae family and is native to Central America, Mexico, South America and the Caribbean.
It was officially described as an aphrodisiac at the end of the 17th century by the Spanish missionary Juan Maria de Salvatierra, who named the plant Damiana in honor of Saint Damian, patron saint of pharmacists.
However, there are ancient records of its use in the form of teas by the Mayans and Aztecs and, since then, by the peoples of Central and South America, for its numerous benefits.
