Collagen is the protein considered to be the main component of the skin, accounting for around 70% of its composition and being present in abundance, especially in the dermis. It is responsible for the structural integrity and resistance of tissues and is important for skin support and firmness.
The skin also has polysaccharides (glycosaminoglycans - GAGs), such as hyaluronic acid (HA), chondroitin and glucosamine, which are essential for the health and beauty of the skin. HA, for example, is important for facial volume and actively participates in maintaining the dermis' water content.
Nowadays, people are living longer and this increase in longevity is accompanied by the search for measures to slow down the appearance of the signs of time on the skin.
This is because from the age of 25, endogenous collagen synthesis gradually decreases and, at the same time, the process of GAG degradation begins. In addition, collagen becomes fragmented and loses its support capacity, which can lead to dermal destructuring and the appearance of wrinkles and sagging skin.
Therefore, the replacement of collagen peptides and GAGs has been used to compensate for the decrease in amino acids in the dermis and to stimulate collagen synthesis, minimizing tissue wear. It thus promotes firmness, dermal restructuring and increased skin volume, mainly helping to reduce wrinkles and sagging, as well as ensuring skin hydration.
