Nucleotides are made up of a pentose, one or more linked phosphate groups and a nitrogenous base, which can be of the purine (uracil, cytosine and thymine) or pyrimidine (adenine and guanine) class. They were discovered between the 19th and 20th centuries, along with nucleic acids (DNA and RNA) and their double helix structure.

They play a fundamental role in the structural formation of DNA and RNA, which act in the storage and transmission of genetic information in all cells, as well as being indispensable in certain biochemical processes, such as cell metabolism and signaling pathways.

Nucleotides are produced by a process that occurs naturally in the body (endogenous) and can also be obtained through breast milk, food and supplementation (exogenous), which can contribute to their endogenous production.

Studies have shown that a lack or deficiency of nucleotides in the diet can impair important functions in the body, such as intestinal, hepatic and, above all, immunological functions, so nucleotides can be classified as semi-essential nutrients.
