Opuntia ficus-indica L. is the most widespread and cultivated cactus in the Mediterranean.
Italian production is mainly concentrated in Sicily, which accounts for 80-90% of national production. This is because this region behaves like a micro-continent, i.e. it has a wide temperature range with hot summers and mild winters. In addition, the volcanic soils are also different, as they have a unique mineral and chemical profile around Etna.
Pruning the cladodes of this cactus is a common practice aimed at increasing fruit production. The cladodes removed are generally discarded as they are considered to be low-value biomass. However, they have high concentrations of polysaccharides and organic acids, such as piscidic acid.
